Työpöydät kirjahyllyiksi, yksilö yhteisöksi

Mobiiliajan verkkolehti TheFeature on haastatellut Aaron Marcusta, pitkän linjan ammattilaista, jonka erityisalaa on käyttöliittymien kulttuuristen erojen tutkiminen etenkin mobiililaitteissa. Culturally Aware Communications -artikkelissa Marcus valottaa viimeisimpiä tutkimustuloksiaan mm. Japanista ja Intiasta, joissa länsimaisella suunnittelulla ei pitkälle pötkitä. Käyttöliittymäsuunnittelusta on tulossa melkoista akrobatiaa, mikäli samaa tuotetta halutaan markkinoida useammissa maanosissa: toisaalla halutaan yhteisöllisyyttä edistäviä ominaisuuksia, toisaalla pidetään viimeiseen saakka kiinni yksityisyydestä. ”Societies such as Germany and Japan have a low tolerance and will therefore continue to demand more buttons, functions and options on their mobile devices. Most UIs have been developed with this type of user population in mind. However, other cultures, such as the US, will most certainly demand the polar opposite. That will mean designers must change device concepts to offer fewer choices and make more decisions on behalf of the user.”

”The fact that we design for the mobile phone as if it were an extension of the desktop is an approach that companies will have to change if they want to address the mobility needs of other cultures. The desktop metaphor makes no sense in India, for example, because most people don’t have desks! They have bookshelves and, if some company would develop a fundamental set of metaphors around books, chapters and pages, as at least one Indian usability analyst has proposed, then it might be a much more appropriate and popular.”

”We can be quite sure that the Western metaphors that have so far dominated UI design, such as a function-oriented approach to communications, will give way to a need to adapt to Eastern thought that centers on group communications and relationships.”
